Winter can wreak havoc on every building, from your smallest house to your largest commercial facility. When you are responsible for commercial facilities, you want to take whatever steps are necessary to protect it or them during winter.
Here are three steps that can be highly effective in not just protecting your property, but also keeping the commercial floor surfaces in the best shape possible.
Step #1: Use walk-off mats.
Walk-off mats are incredibly important, especially during the winter months. When you have clients, employees, or even customers coming onto your facility, even it’s for your tenants, it’s a good idea to use walk-off mats along with each major entry door. These mats will collect a lot of snow, slush, water, and even road salt and sand.
It won’t collect all of it, so it’s still a good idea to have your maintenance department regularly mop up any excess water or residue from the tile or linoleum surface along those entryways.
If you don’t use walk-off mats and don’t keep the area clean, the sand and salt and other debris will get tracked deeper into the facility, increasing the risk of scratches and other damage to your commercial floor surfaces.
Step #2: Spend more time on floor maintenance.
You may have a habit of washing the floors every night, but it may be necessary to buff, strip, wax, or even do repairs more consistently during the winter months.
It’s a good investment to spend more time on commercial floor maintenance during the winter, even if it takes your maintenance department away from other basic tasks.
Step #3: Clear parking areas and walkways.
Yes, you already do this, especially during normal snow events, but as the snow melts, freezes, and even salt, sand, and other debris gets tracked around from the parking area to the sidewalks, it’s a good idea to keep them clear.
When it’s dry, have your maintenance department blow off some of the walkways. This can be a great way to reduce the sand and dirt that gets generally tracked in during these winter months.
