Indoor Air Quality Concerns for Commercial Facilities in Summer

open windowWe talk a lot about indoor air quality in homes and in commercial facilities, especially in the winter. During the summer, though, those same concerns can be relevant, especially if you have central air conditioning throughout the facility.

Whenever you keep the windows and doors closed, you limit the ability of the natural air to flow through, and that limits nature’s way of cleaning the air inside the facility.

You probably have plenty of filtration systems in place to help clean the air, but that’s not enough to make sure everyone who enters the facility, works there, or uses it on a regular basis is safe and healthy at all times. You also need to make sure the commercial facility is as clean as they can possibly be.

Recently, we talked about spring cleaning, working from the top down, cleaning out those docs for heating and air conditioning, and much more. Now that summer is in full swing, it’s a good idea to keep up with the overall cleanliness of your facility, not just the floors.

It’s a good idea to have your maintenance personnel wipe down the corners where the ceiling meets the walls, the window sills, and any other area that is easy to overlook with regard to cleanliness.

They should do this once every two weeks or, once a week if possible. It doesn’t have to be a major, thorough spring cleaning type of project, but a dry rag or other cleaning material can help bring that dust, dirt, and other pollutants off of those surfaces and, ultimately, down onto the floor.

As you probably well guessed, this should be done just prior to cleaning those commercial floor surfaces. When you do this, when your maintenance personnel keeps up with this, there will be much less debris flying around that people could breathe in. That will keep your facility cleaner, healthier, and safer for everyone.
