How to Shine Ceramic Tile

Floor PolishingCeramic tile has its own shine due to the baked on glazing with which they are finished. This glazing is strong, water resistant, and nonporous. With proper maintenance, this tile will hold on to this glazed shine without the need of wax or sealer.

In fact, you will find that the tile industry warns against using wax, sealers, and finishes because they often dull the glaze finish. Instead, they recommend proper cleaning techniques. The right cleaners and technique will restore the natural shine that gives ceramic tile its luster.

Here is a guide to help you restore the shine to your ceramic tile & flooring:

1. Use gloves and eye protection.
2. Dilute the Porcelain and Ceramic Cleaner solution with water at a 1:10 ratio. Use very hot water when diluting.
3. You can hand scrub or use a machine for cleaning. Use liberal amounts of solutions when applying. Let it stand for about twenty minutes.
4. If scrubbing by hand, use a stiff brush or plastic scrubbing pad. Be sure to work it into the grout as well as the tile. Steel wool and other very abrasive materials should not be used, as they will damage the glazing.
5. Use a machine or mop to remove the dirty solution from the tiles and grout. If using a mop, change the water often to avoid spreading dirt back over clean tiles.
6. Once the tiles have been thoroughly rinsed, dry them well to remove any remaining residue and make them shine.
If necessary, apply Miracle Grout Sealer once the floor is completely dry. Be sure to wipe off any excess with a soft cloth. Our Miracle Grout Sealer does not penetrate the tile glazing so you don’t have to worry about damaging the shine you just worked so hard to create.

The natural shine from the glazing should be enough to look beautiful, using a glossy sealer or additional finish on the tile will ultimately dull it. These products also tend to attract dirt and debris which will make the surface shine even harder to maintain. It is best to let the bare glazing finish provide the shine.
