Relying on ceramic tile for a commercial floor surface can be a great asset because of the shine. However, they can also pose a number of challenges, including safety, especially when they get wet. Over time, if they are not cleaned properly, they can also have residue buildup that reduces the shine.
Here are a few tips that can help your commercial maintenance department restore the shine to those ceramic tiles.
- Always use gloves and eye protection. This should go without saying, but whenever working with cleaning solutions or other materials, it’s absolutely essential to stay protected.
- Dilute the porcelain and ceramic cleaning solution with water at a 1:10 ratio. It’s best to use hot water when mixing this solution.
- Use the right equipment. Your maintenance department can either apply the cleaning solution by hand or a machine. However they do it, it’s important to be liberal with the amount of cleaning solution they apply to the floor.
- Use a stiff brush. Whether applying it by hand or with a machine, it’s a good idea to use a stiff brush, but avoid steel wool or extremely abrasive materials because they will damage the glazing of those tiles.
- Use a machine or mop to remove the solution. Once clean, you’ll want to remove as much of the solution as possible. A mop may be practical, but it isn’t the best thing. The right floor cleaning machine would be optimal in these situations.
- Dry thoroughly. Once the solution has been removed, it’s important to make sure the tile surfaces are clean and dry. If there is any moisture left behind, it can pose a potential slipping hazard.
If the ceramic tile is considered relatively old, then grout sealant may be needed. You may also want to consider a grout cleaning machine if the grout between the tiles appears dirty, old, or worn out.
