5 Simple Commercial Floor Maintenance Tips

After Construction Work, Cleanup BeginsThere are many steps that go into properly maintaining any commercial floor space. If you are a property manager, business owner, or maintenance personnel in the Greater Toronto Area, you might want to pay attention to some of these five simple commercial floor maintenance tips that can make all the difference for the property you’re responsible for.

Tip #1: Plan ahead.

You need to have a plan in place before you begin taking on any type of commercial floor maintenance. Whether it’s cleaning, stripping, buffing, polishing, or repairing, make sure you sit down and figure out exactly what needs to be done so you can gather the right supplies and tools.

Tip #2: Bring the right tools.

You’re not going to need all of the tools and even large equipment for every single job. For example, if there has been a spill and you need to clean it up quickly, you can certainly bring out the big machines but this is not practical in most commercial settings, especially during normal business hours.

As long as you have the right tools with you, you’ll know you’re getting the job done properly.

Tip #3: Sweep twice, coat once.

This is an important tip for vinyl, hardwood, polished concrete, and other commercial floor surfaces. You need to make sure you clean the floor thoroughly before you begin applying any type of wax or coating.

Carpenters have a basic rule that goes like this: measure twice, cut once. This is similar, but it’s about sweeping twice and coating once.

Tip #4: Only use what you need.

It’s tempting to just pour a bunch of cleaning solution, wax solution, or other mixtures on the floor and spread it out. Over time that can waste a tremendous amount of money for the business. Measure out exactly what is needed and nothing more.

Tip #5: Pay attention to baseboards, edges, and corners.

While you may rely on large commercial floor cleaning equipment for significant areas, don’t neglect the corners, edges, and baseboards. As long as you pay attention to these parts of the facility, everything will look great now and well into the future.
