Step 3

Seat the handle & adjusting bar and then insert the two pull pins.

Step 4

Connect the power cord from the handle to the motor base.

Step 5

Recycle the packaging that your machine arrived in.

How to Operate Your Stonechat

How to Power On The Stonechat

Step 1

Connect the power cable to the machine by inserting it and twist to lock.

Step 2

Press Safety Button on handle and rotate forward. Release safety button.

Step 3

To stop the machine, rotate handle grip towards your body (keeping hands on the handle). The safety button will lock back into place.

Step 4

Make sure when operating the machine, the Amperage monitor does not appear in the “red-zone". Amperage consumption in excess of 14 Amps can trip the breaker on the handle or the wall outlet circuit breaker.

Step 5

If the breaker trips, push IN on the white button to reset the breaker. Make sure you operate the machine below 14 Amps. If the amperage is higher than 14 Amps, reduce the friction or weights on the machine.

How to Attach a Cleaning Tool

Step 1

Rest the Stonechat on it's side.

Step 2

Mount the magpie, or drive block (pad driver) to gearbox of the machine by turning the drive block counter-clockwise so it locks to the clutch plate.

Step 3

Attach diamonds (or a cleaning pad ) to the magpie (drive block).

How To "Work" The Stonechat

Step 1

Standing behind machine, loosen the tri-nut to lower (or raise) the handle.

Step 2

Make sure machine is balanced and handle is at hip height. Then tighten the tri-nut to "lock" that position.

Step 3

When operating your machine, raising the handle slightly swings the machine to the right and lowering the handle swings the machine to the left. Always operate the machine in a safe and careful manner.

How to Use the SplashGuard

Step 1

The SplashGuard is typically "locked" to the Stonechat by the 3 black screw knobs.

When you attach a magpie with diamonds, or a drive block with a cleaning pad, the SplashGuard will be raised from the floor.

Step 2

Turn the 3 black screw knobs counter-clockwise to release and lower the SplashGuard flush to the floor.

Step 3

When the SplashGuard is lowered, it encloses the 18" driver and prevents the spray & splatter caused by the rotating motion of the machine from ending up on baseboards, walls and nearby vertical surfaces.

How to Downsize The Stonechat

Step 1

Release and lower the SplashGuard to the floor by turning the 3 black screw knobs counter clockwise.

Step 2

Rest the machine on its side and rotate the SplashGuard around the 4 mounting tabs to release it from the gearbox housing.

Step 3

Remove the SplashGuard from machine.

Step 4

Mount your 13" cleaning tool to your machine and you are now ready to work in tight/smaller cleaning path areas.

How To Use The Stonechat For Baseboard Cleaning/Stripping

Step 1

Remove the SplashGuard from your Stonechat (for baseboard cleaning, your machine must already be fitted with a water tank and flex hose assembly).

To do this, follow steps 1 to 3 from the section "How To Downsize The Stonechat".

Step 2

Place pad on to the Scrub Jay #3. You can use 3" side pads for cleaning square baseboards, or 4" side pads for cleaning cove baseboards. Secure with Pad Locker and center lock.

Step 3

Tighten center lock with provided center lock wrench. Make sure the plate is recessed below the pad surface. This may need to be re-tightened during operation.

Step 4

Adjust the flex hose so that the orange tip is positioned just above the side pad to allow water to flow directly on to the side pad.

Step 5

Turn the 3-way water valve to the "up" position. This will allow water to flow in to the flex hose assembly on to the side pad.

Step 6

Fill the water tank with clean water, as you'll need a constant flow of water for baseboard cleaning & stripping.

Step 7

Apply Centaur's TroubleGone baseboard cleaner/stripper to the baseboards using a brush.

Allow the TroubleGone to sit on the baseboard for 5 minutes for cleaning OR for 15 minutes if stripping wax.

Step 8

Position body 45-degree angle from wall, as pictured. Allow for a constant stream of water during operations of baseboard cleaning / stripping. Walk the machine down the baseboards, apply further pressure if needed.

Step 9

As you're running the machine, use the water release handle to allow a constant stream of water to flow to the ScrubJay to "wash down the TroubleGone" and clean the baseboard.

How to Detach The Handle On The Stonechat

Step 1

First detach the power cable by twisting the twist-lock connectors and pulling the cable apart.

Step 2

Disconnect the power cord from the handle to the motor base.

Step 3

Loosen the Tri-Nut so that the handle is in an "unlocked" position.

Step 4

Remove the two pull pins from the motor base and separate the handle.

How to Complete Jobs Faster With The Stonechat

When grinding, honing or polishing, the more downward pressure you can apply, the faster you can get your job done and with less effort. To create this downward pressure on the Stonechat you can use Centaur’s 40 lbs (18 kg) Horseshoe weights.

In most situations, you will typically need three (3) horseshoe weights stacked on top of each other (giving you 120 lbs or 54 kg of added weight), to reduce the number of times the machine needs to pass left-to-right over the work area. This will get you the desired results in less time, saving you time and money.

When you add weights to the machine, more friction is created between the diamonds/cleaning pad and floor. This makes the machine draw more electric current from the power supply. To ensure you don’t trip the circuit breakers, the Stonechat is equipped with an amperage monitor, which lets you know when it’s safe to add more weights.

The amperage monitor is located on the handle and shows you the electric current (in Amps) that the machine is operating on when in use.

To work with the Stonechat as efficiently as possible, maintain the amperage reading at or just below the 15 Amps (white indication zone). If the monitor shows 10 Amps, you can apply the 40 lbs weight (one at a time) until the indicator is just below 15 Amps.

Depending on the friction and hardness of the floor surface, the Stonechat can handle up to an additional ten (10) weights, for a combined total weight of 400 lbs (180Kgs).

If current drawn exceeds 15 Amps, the gauge will appear in the red zone. When this happens, you must stop the machine and remove one (1) weight. Keep removing weights one at a time until the indicator has returned below 15 Amps.

Operating above 15 Amps may damage the motor, and or trip the circuit breaker and on-board safety fuse.

If the monitor shows you’re in the red zone (over 15 Amps) and you have no weights on the Stonechat, it tells you that the grinding diamonds/pad you are using is too aggressive for the surface and you should change to a less aggressive diamonds/pad.

Dry vs Wet Grinding Explained

There are two methods to grinding a surface, either wet or dry. There are advantages and disadvantages to both methods and this is the explanation.

Dry Grinding

Pros:

  • Fast and easy to perform the work, as the cleanup is quite minimal. Simply vacuum or sweep up the dust and it is done.
  • Easy to dispose of residue as it can be placed into garbage bags or bins.
  • Specific DRY only diamonds are available.

Cons:

  • Respiratory problems can occur from breathing in the dust, some being carcinogenic.
  • Diamond wear is much greater, as temperatures rise due to the friction. The diamonds also wear out faster.
  • Requires ventilation, safety breathing mask and leaves dust on all surfaces which will require cleaning.

Wet Grinding

Pros:

  • No dust created and risk of breathing it since as all the dust is encapsulated within the water.
  • Diamonds last much longer, as the water provides cooling.
  • Larger selection of diamonds are available. Since there are various types of surfaces, having the right diamond is critical to providing a superior finish.

Cons:

  • Cleaning can be more labour intensive, as slurry is the by product from wet grinding. Often requires a wet/dry vacuum with squeegee tool as well as separating the water from the solids before disposing.
  • The surface can be slippery, extra caution must be taken.

The Stonechat helps to do both Dry & Wet grinding easier and faster.

Dry Grinding:
The integrated SplashGuard features a 1.5″ diameter vacuum exhaust dust port. When the SplashGuard is lowered, it will trap the dust from being airborne and can be extracted by a vacuum, keeping the air cleaner and safer. This will also help minimize dust cleanup.

Wet Grinding:
Having the onboard water supply will ensure the diamonds last longer by maintaining the correct temperature during use. When you lower the integrated SplashGuard, it will encapsulate the drive block, keeping the mess and spray underneath the machine, preventing cleanup of the baseboards, walls and other surfaces.
